TMO has strict copyright rules, but I was wondering if TMU was the same. Are we allowed to use copywritten music has long as we give credit where credit is due?

Technically you will be in breach of copyright for broadcasting somebody else's music.

But I've never had a problem with this; the way I see it is that, as long as you credit the musician, you are helping to advertise their work, which might be beneficial to the musician the more people see your film.

Not crediting the musician however ... ... :gun_bandana:

If I were to use some music created by one of the members of our own community, or close associated community, I would ask permission to use it in one of my movies... Especially if they had never benifited from their creations financially. Would just seem to be good manners to do so.

We're not going to pull a movie because it has a copyrighted song in it - on the other hand, if I get a Cease and Desist letter from the rightsholder, down it comes. If an artist doesn't want his or her music in a film hosted here, that's their call, and even ignoring the legalities, it's just right to respect their desires.

However, I would suggest that, as has been mentioned, you credit the people whose music you use, commercial or not. I'm not going to pull a movie because you didn't, but again, it's just right to show some respect for people who make your movie what it is...think of it this way, if they're not worthy of credit, then why is it important to have their music in your movie?
