View Full Version : Any Dune fans?

I'm in the beginning stages of what will be a very long-term project.

I'm writing a script telling portions of Dune from Chani's perspective - not only reworking some segments already in the novels but also including scenes based on her life outside of the main storyline.

If you are as fanatical a fan of Dune as I am, I'd love the opportunity to share the script with you to get your viewpoint. (Not yet - it's not done yet!) At this point, I'd also like to bounce a few ideas off of you to see if you agree that they fit the general essence of Dune.

I'm definitely a Dune fan, though I've only read Dune and Dune Messiah (and of course watched the various movies).

An interesting idea...

Sounds really interesting. I've not read the books, only watched the David Lynch film version, but I'll definitely watch your version. Have you had any ideas for a title for it?

So far I've come up with the very exciting title "Chani"

I read recently that that's a contingent of people who believe that the Dune series is demeaning to women or at least doesn't put women on the same level as men. Now, if you've followed my movies/forum rants at all, you'll know that I am a tad bit of a feminist. Not scary bra-burning (although I suppose most guys would technically be FOR bra-burning :P) but more along the lines of judge people as individuals not genders. Anyway! I disagreed with that perception of the women in Dune because I've always felt that Chani was an excellent example of a strong woman. And ta da! I was inspired. That's why the title "Chani" feels appropriate.

In the David Lynch film, is Chani the little sister of Paul Atreides - with the spice-blue eyes? Cause, from what I remember, she's a very powerful character. I suppose whether a story is seen as feminist or not is about whose point of view the story is from. The same story could be told in completely different ways depending on whose eyes we're seeing things through. Anyway, this sounds like a really interesting take on the books, Dulci.

About the title - don't all of the novels have the word Dune in the title? Maybe you could bring the word into your title too - eg "Chani of Dune", or something like that?

Alia is the younger sister of Paul. Chani is his mistress.

Thanks for the suggestion - I love feedback.

I've read quite a lot of science fiction, so I'm happy to have a read at it once it's done, if you like - to see if it all makes sense to somebody not too familiar with Dune.

Thank you!

And you too, Biggs!

You're welcome. Forgot to mention that I played one of the games as well. It was fun trying to harvest that spice before the worms came!

(Where's my worm smiley???)

Sounds like an interesting character study; fresh perspective on the saga from a different viewpoint... been a while since I read any of Ole Frank's books, but like everyone else I saw the Lynch version and the mini-series, so if I can be of any (limited) help, please feel free to call on me.

This sounds an intriguing project. Unfortunately, I've never read any of the books, watched the movie or TV series so any help I can offer probably ends here, but I wish you luck and look forward to seeing it.

That's funny, the idea that women in Dune weren't the equals of men - Chani was certainly a strong woman (and one got the impression that all the Fremen women were - it seemed to be more of a patriarchal society, but their women were certainly partners, not underlings), and Jessica wasn't exactly a weak sister. And in the Machiavellian world of Dune, the Bene Gesserit were hardly shrinking violets - yes, their plan didn't quite work out, but the Reverend Mother was quite a scary character.

Irulan, on the other hand....well, maybe not as strong...LOL.

Was a huge fan of the original novel which I first read shortly after it came out (probably first paperback edition, since I was, after all, a teenager) - I believe I read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune - after that, I was kind of Duned out and stopped - I've considered picking up some of Herbert's son's Dune books (the House Atreides, House Harkonnen, etc.), but I'm afraid I just wouldn't be able to get into them.

Ratonero's unfinished Imperium series on TMO seemed very influenced by Dune in a lot of ways, and that's what I enjoyed about it - the science fiction setting and the Italian city-state intrigue.

Would love to see what you do with the subject.

Ah, Ken, you've given me yet one more reason to like you.

His sons books aren't nearly up to par with the original writings, but I admit to a deep-seated obsession that won't let me not read them.

I actually have a yearly Dune series reading every December, and only the Frank Herbert books qualify for that.

The leap from Children of Dune to God Emperor of Dune seems to be the stopping point for most people who have read the first 3.

I've just checked my second, less organised, library (aka the attic) and dug out my copies of the six Dune paperbacks.

Once I'm done with my James Ellroy re-reading marathon (half way through the last, The Cold 6000) I'll read them again.

Must be 15 years or so since last I ventured to Arakis (sp?); I recall enjoying the first, hating Messiah, liking Children, getting lost in God Emperor, then totally confused in the last two.

I remember the Lynch film too: Sting? Oh dearie, dearie, me!

"I WILL kill you!" that was Sting's best line from that film.
Actually Sting was also pretty good in "Brimstone and Treacle."

I am a big sci-fi fan, and have read the Dune series, good luck with this project Dulci.

p.s you'd think those shorts might chaffe a bit? oh the corners!

...that probably explains the twitchy performance, to be honest... and all the leaping about at the start of the knife-fight scene (he was obviously adjusting his positioning...:))

On topic...

Seriously interesting idea, though; might be an idea to utilise your annual "readathon" with a notepad handy and jot down any interesting sequences that expose Chani's character a bit, and use those to compile a character study (how did she get to this point? etc).

I always (well, ok, almost) prefer books over the movies based on the books. The Dune series creates a rich, rich world. However, plenty of my friends have read just the first few chapters and said "eh".

Frank's writing style can put some off, but it's definately worth persevering with. As Dulci says, there's a fascinating plethora of interesting contrasts in there, not just Arrakis itself, but the whole pantheon of the Dune universe. If you don't read any of the others, Dune itself is a classic sci-fi novel.

Goodness gracious this is an old thread! I thought I had started working on this project a little over a year ago, but apparently I have no sense of time...

Anyway! I am now actively working on this again. I was thinking and thinking....what should I make for the Reallusion sci fi contest....and then I remembered - wait a minute! I have a sci fi script sitting on the back burner! I had put this movie on hold while I came to grips with iClone.

So.....Chani! Here I come!

Don't feel bad Dulci. I didn't get into the Dune movie until 15 years after it was released. I saw it on cable and that's when I found out Picard was in it! Whoa! I didn't care too much for that floating fat man though but the rest was great. :taz:
