So due to a game issue with my freecam gone haywire and i now must reinstall the game and get rid of alot of excess props that i never use (this makes it load slow) I wonder, since I will need/want to start from scratch on Ultima Thule and use outside editing to its fullest, should I wait to film it when I become much more proficient at the FX stuff I wanna deliver with this film?

Making a Big Sci fi within game limits seems kinda silly to me now, ya know?

Gah, I hate these situations, with all the films going round in my head, I hate start/stopping to do other things, but I'm bummed that I will lose a ton of work because the game has gone wonky.

Can you Export what you've done so you can at least use some of the raw footage in the next version? Or is the problem so bad that it won't Export?

Sucks, though... Sorry.

do what michealb6 did, make small demo movies to practice the AE skillz and save it all for when you feel you're ready.

Ack that sucks the big one...

To be honest, it sounds like you weren't happy with the current product anyway, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise for you?

If you were really going to reshoot what you've already done anyway, it's probably best it happened now and not right near the end... that would have been heartbreaking :crying:

At least this way you get to start with a nice clean install and can weed out the stuff in your data folder you don't need or want.

Do you really think you need to reshoot everything?

Even if you want to get a fresh start with all the big space-opera like scenes - there must be some footage that can be integrated!

And I have to agree with Uber - outside effects are best learned actually doing them and messing around a lot - which is why my first two outside edited films were short ones. I just found the prospect of doing a long film daunting. Once you roughly know what is possible, it's much easier to shoot scenes which actually lend themselves to be tinkered with!

You could always make trailers... they're a good playing ground. Although you shouldn't complain when we want the full movies afterwards.... :D

I'm sorry to read that Jase

I recall Howie doing what you're thinking of. Maybe a chat with him? Just a thought.

On a side note. Do any of you create a new studio lot for each movie you make?

Good luck Jase, pulling for you.

Wooh, it sounds like a major major task to start filming the whole lot from scratch, Jase. But if that is the way the muses (and screw ups with the game) are pushing you, I guess you could treat the original version as like a story-board - demos recorded at home of the album you're gonna do in Abbey Road, type thing.

But, maybe before you make that final decision you could try a shorter more manageable project this way. Maybe make a new Ultima trailer using new footage and trying some cool stuff out in the external edit. You could base it vaguely around the old trailer (which I personally thought looked bloody great) just to get a feel for whether refilming from scratch is necessary or not. At the very least you'll have a cool new trailer and some nice footage in the can, and might have learned a few new fancy tricks in the process.

Anyway, Godspeed You Black Emperor, whatever you decide to do! :punk: (That there was a Star Wars quote, as well as the name of a band.)

I think you need to stay true to your vision.

That's my official deep thought of the day.

I reached a similar point about 14 months ago with Public Transit, though there was no technical catalyst that halted my efforts... Just a realization that the footage I'd filmed felt "too small" for the scale of project I wanted to produce.

I'd say some others have given good advice already. If you feel you want to do more with it than you're currently doing, perhaps it would be good to work on some practice projects that build up your effects skillset. "To TMO" was very much a practice project for me -- which is perhaps a lesson in itself: don't let your practice projects get too huge if Ultima Thule is what you really want to do. :p

I think what you're really looking for is to ask yourself how important this project is, and how much time and energy you want to put into making it perfect.

i fear i am over-thinking things,

You? Really? I wouldn't have believed it......(searches for a 'sarcasm' emote____)

My advice is very simple - do whatever is going to make you happiest with the final result. If that means salvaging what you have and then some once you pc is fixed in order to get a sooner release date, then go for it. I'm pretty sure that anything you would deem as 'ok' would be flippin great in everyone else's eyes!

If, on the other hand, you know that you really want to get to grips with OS editing and get all the best FX's in it, then starting from scratch is the only way you are gonna keep yourself interested in the project because you won't be able to do what you want to do with what you currently have (that made sense in my head)

What i'm trying to say is do what you gotta do to keep yourself excited about the project as thats the only way a) its gonna get made and b) you're gonna be happy with it. So suck it up and get on with it man :gunsmilie:
