Actors of a similar ilk

I'll leave Deniro vs Pachino and Tom Hanks vs Steve Guttenberg to others as I would like to focus on...

Brian Dennehy vs Joe Don Baker

Both men were generally typecast as hard ass lawmen though Joe Don was decidedly unkempt and redneck while Dennehy had perhaps a touch more sophistication. Dennehy's best screen moments came as Sherrif jerkwad in Rambo, Sherrif Badguy in Silverado and Lt. Hardnose in FX. Dennehy also had roles in TV's Dallas, Dynasty and Knots Landing. Meanwhile Joe Don will forever be Buford Pusser (a role that Dennehy also played in 78..hmmm) in Walking Tall, Bad Police Chief in Fletch and the horribly unkempt Mitchell (immortalized by MST3K).

Personally, forced to choose who I would watch and who I would rather be, I would go with Joe Don Baker in both cases. It amazes me that a guy with two first names who is that burly looking could be a leading man in any movie. Plus theres some smartass coolness about Joe Don that makes me think I would enjoy having a beer with the guy. Dennehy, probably thinks he's better than me and drinks an aged scotch while reading Shakespeare. Jerk. Rambo shoulda finished him off.

I always remember Joe Don Baker from the role he played in Edge of Darkness... something just sticks in the mind about him in that...

Joe Don Baker for me. If only for his performance in the BBC drama "Edge of Darkness".

I wonder if that's available on DVD? God, it was magnificent.

EOD certainly racked up the favorable reviews but consensus says dumb Americans wont like it. Probably to thinky. Ooh look, Americas's Next Top Model is on.

Short Guy Devito vs Short Guy Pesci

Yea, Pesci's Tommy Devito (weird eh) character from Goodfellas spouts one of the most quoted lines in mafia movie history, and My Cousin Vinny was amusing but this is no contest. You cant touch taxi's Louie Depalma, plus the guy directed War of the Roses, Throw Mama from the Train and Death to Smootchy (think he likes his comedy black? And for the record, I think Death to Smootchy is underrated), produced Get Shorty and Pulp Fiction, acted in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and still manages to show up on "live" television drunk. Case closed.

Perhaps Gary Colman vs Emmanuel Lewis woulda been a better comparison.

A tough one as Im pretty familiar with Oldman and not so much with Roth. Thoroughly enjoyed Oldman's portayal of Beethoven in Immortal Beloved and absolutely loved Romeo is Bleeding (sexy one legged villianess will do it every time). Total cheeseball performance in the 5th Element and chameleon's into Lt Gordon. As per Roth all I got is Resevior Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I'd give him a mulligan but he wears really irritating rock star sunglasses in all his publicity shots. Edge to Oldman.

Ah, you need to see them playing tennis in Stoppard's "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead" to judge them fairly.

My response to "The Fifth Element" Is Nil by Mouth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119792/) : Oldman made it with the money he got from Hollywood. My kind of guy.

R&G are Dead is on my to see list and Nil by Mouth looks good but depressing (better than albino alligator perhaps..hehe. Step aside. Actor at the helm.)

I forgot that Oldman played Sid Vicious with that Hole gal.

Nil by Mouth is an astonishing film. Not a comedy though.

Yes, it's harrowing, but you will fall in love (as every Brit has done) with the great, great, amazing, Kathy Burke.

Now she is admirable in every way. I love her so much

Well, I enjoy a weirdo vague thread that meanders through its point so...

I was trying to find a proper partner for Curtis Armstrong (Booger for the uninitiated) and Im at a loss. Booger was a great secondary character. A sidekick. His first three movies were Risky Business, Revenge of the Nerds and Better Off Dead. He plays roughly the same character in all three and basically makes a living off this persona. Im down with that as his first three movies are better than 99% of what most actors ever get to participate in. Who would be a similar actor?

Strangely, It strikes me that David Johansen (New York Dolls fame, probably best know for his scrooged role) is similar to Booger but after a quick look at IMDB he's just not on the same level. Fun fact about David though...apparently, he was in consideration for the Max Cady role in Cape Fear. Hmm, David Jo or Robert Deniro....well...lets go Robert D. on this one. And speaking of which, Robert Mitchum was just a super badass.

Moving on, Gilbert Godfried is similarly not capable of dueling with Booger. Then theres Alan Ruck who played Cameron, the sidekick to Ferris Bueller. He's really freakin good but his movie output is small (though his tv output is huge...the stint in Spin City was memorable). Still, worth a passing thought.

Somehow from here I end up on Bronson Pinchot who also starred in Risky Business (interestingly Risky Biz was the first motion picture for both Pinchot and Armstrong) as a fine sidekick albiet secondary to booger in my op. Bronson had the pleasure of working with Mark Linn Baker and Griffin Dunn who are freaking dopplegangers of each other to the point where I always thought that dude from After Hours was cousin Larry. Cest Le vie.

Finally I think of Herve Villachez as knick knack was a fine sidekick but aside from Fantasy Island theres really not a lot of substance there. And such a depressing ending.

So I ask of you...A good sparring partner to match up to the ultimate sidekick Booger?

Well, as you seem to have gone all U.S. TV on us (I understood little of your post, and I've no idea who Booger is), I'll respond with the best sidekick EVER!!!!1111!!!ZOMG (ahem. Sorry)

The one, the only:

Norrie; a cunning post, my lord... as cunning as a fox which has just been made Professor of Cunning at Oxford University, I venture to add...
