Anyone know of a good solution (outside of After Effects) for a convincing camera shake effect in post? Not handheld camera emulation (though ideas there would be welcome as well), no I'm thinking more along the lines of Godzilla walking by, camera shakes with his steps, that kind of thing.

Any suggestions? I know Sony Vegas has keyframing of its pan/crop window, but I don't think I can pull off a convincing effect that way without more work than seems rational.

Sometimes there's no choice.

In the film I'm making, I froze a frame, duplicated it - then offset the duplicate (how far you offset determines how violent it will look). Then you copy both frames several times to achieve the shaking effect.

Should work for a monster footstep, certainly worked for my violent hyperspace sequence.

Futurama, anyone? :D

There are a few plug-ins available for Vegas but, sadly as with most things, they aren't cheap:-

http://www.newbluefx.com/motion-effects.html; full motion effects plugin (but the price made me baulk...)

There is a vid tutorial HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J9Rk5zsPnA)that shows a method of doing it in vanilla Vegas, but (not having Vegas installed at the moment), I can't verify if it works.

I've only attempted it once, and that was with key framing in Vegas. I hope you find a better answer, 'cause I wanna know! :51:

I want that one - badly! It's what actually came first to my mind when I read the thread title. Wish I had a crook of gold!

that's only AU$208 bucks. I am so buying that. If only magix had something like this, then i wouldn't have to instal vegas. But for the shake, i'll put up with it.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I knew about NewBlue, but was hoping to avoid that expense right now. Ah, if only $$ grew on trees, I'd buy up that whole NewBlue set. Been lusting after it for quite some time, some nice stuff in there.

Unfortunately, I can't do JazzX's method in this instance (which sounds wonderfully easy) because I've got moving action on screen during the shakes. Looks like I'll just need to hunker down and do it manually in Vegas. Ah well, another hour or two on this already time-intensive film isn't going to kill me I guess. :)

I know that a while back they released a plugin for The Movies to do this, but 2 issues:

1) The camera shake effects the ENTIRE movie.
2) The final result looks a bit stuttery.

The Augie64 filter is very useful for those kind of effects, but it is limited to only the Movies, yes. For iClone and MS, unless I'm mistaken, there isn't a "built-in" ability to create shaking, and (as in most cases), it's only possible to do it in "post" (IF you can find the right plugin for your editor, of course...)

Found this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_J9Rk5zsPnA), dunno if it'll be of any use whatsoever

EDIT- It works!

Nice find, Asa! Works pretty well for a cheap solution.
