EuroparlTV - The European Parliament's new Web TV to launch 17 September
On Wednesday 17 September at 9.00am UK time, the European Parliament will launch its new, web-based TV service at www.europarltv.europa.eu (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarltv.europa.eu/).
Europarltv is not a single channel but is split into four channels, each directed to a different audience:
Your Parliament, aimed at those with a particular interest in politics at the EU level: informed citizens, industry groups, social partners, lobbyists, academics as well as those working in the EU institutions.
Your Voice, conceived for the general public and providing the possibility of featuring user-generated content.
Young Europe, aimed particularly at school-aged children, high users of the internet and the European electorate of the future.
Parliament Live will carry continuous coverage of live events in the European Parliament, notably debates in the plenary sessions, with a link to the audiovisual archives of previous sessions, as well as the activities of the committees (the latter coming on stream at a later date).
Sheffield European Festival - 13 September
Sheffield is playing host this Saturday to a one day European Festival as part of the European Year of Intercultural dialogue: 2008, and to mark 50 years of the European Parliament. Throughout the EU events are taking place this year to look at how different cities and communities are dealing with migration and immigration, how different traditions and cultures are being respected and understood and how people are learning to live together with their differences.
From 10.00am to 4.00pm the European Parliament's UK Office is organising events in and around Sheffield Cathedral. The events include street theatre, Polish dancing and Islamic art. An MEP Question Time will be held in the Cathedral with Yorkshire & Humber MEPs Timothy Kirkhope (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.org.uk/requetes/kirkhope.asp), Richard Corbett (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.org.uk/requetes/corbett.asp) and Linda McAvan (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.org.uk/requetes/mcavan.asp), chaired by the BBC's Len Tingle.
Rwanda elections observation - 15 September
West Midlands MEP Michael Cashman (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.org.uk/requetes/cashman.asp) (Labour) and Welsh Labour MEP Glenys Kinnock (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.org.uk/requetes/kinnock.asp) will be in Rwanda from 12-16 September to observe the parliamentary elections on 15 September.
Film Prize 2008 - European Parliament Lux prize finalists
A UK co-production is among the three shortlisted finalists for the European Parliament's Lux film prize. Le silence de Lorna is directed by Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne and is about a young Albanian woman living in Belgium. The other nominations are Delta, a German-Hungarian production about villagers cut off from the outside world; and Obcan Havel, a Czech film profiling former Czech President Vaclav Havel.
The films will be screened in the European Parliament buildings from 15 September to 17 October, after which MEPs will vote on which film should take this year's prize. The Lux prize will be awarded on 22 October. Last year's winner (wlmailhtml:{7F033DE4-2A47-4D19-9C2E-623D2ADE67A5}mid://00000024/!x-usc:http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+IM-PRESS+20071107FCS12747+0+DOC+XML+V0//EN&language=EN) was The Edge of Heaven.
Sakharov Prize 2008
The award of the European Parliament's Prize for Freedom of Expression and Human Rights will take place in December. Nominations have now been received for this year's winner. They are: Ingrid Betancourt; the Dalai Lama; Morgan Tsvangirai; Hu Jia (from China); Alexandr Kozulin (from Belarus); Abbot Malu Malu from Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Mikhail Trepashkin (from Russia). A shortlist of three will be decided on at the Foreign Affairs Committee on 22 September, with the overall winner decided in mid-October. The award ceremony will take place on 17 December.

Matrimonial law - jurisdiction & applicable law - 1st reading Regulation - Civil Liberties Committee - Monday;
Commissioner Peter Mandelson to International Trade Committee on Doha talks (Monday).
Public hearings and committee workshops
The International Criminal Court and international justice - Development Cttee - Monday;
Human rights in EU neighbourhood policy - Human Rights Sub-Committee (Thursday);
The European Citizen's Initiative - workshop in Constitutional Affairs Cttee - Thursday;
UCITS workshop - includes evidence from Paul Freeman, Managing Director, Black Rock, UK (Economic Cttee - Monday);
Workshop on Microcredit in Europe (Economic Cttee - Thursday) .
Next plenary session (Brussels, 22-25 September)
MEPs will meet in their political groups on 16-18 September to prepare voting positions for the next plenary session. The session will take place in Brussels again instead of Strasbourg. Repairs to the ceiling have been carried out in Strasbourg but the relevant safety inspection reports have yet to be published.
Highlights of the next session include:
Telecoms reform package - 1st reading vote;
Shipping/maritime package - 2nd reading;
Timeshare - consumer protection directive - 1st reading;
Hedge Funds - non-legislative report.
