The Maverick

Here is the opening scene, and a few moments that follow after from my story, codenamed 'Project: Connection'- where the offer to direct it is still open:

Forgive this, but I've posted the character bios again just for clarification when you read the script. This part is totally written by J. Latham- I usually write and help out with other scenes that come later. The entire script is subject to change dialogically, but not really story-wise:

Original concept and Story by The Maverick
Adapted Story by J. Latham
Screenplay by J. Latham and The Maverick
Directed by __________

Main Characters:

Marshall Haber – The lead law enforcement officer on the space station Acadia. Having a very simplified view of his job- stop criminals, no matter what- Haber has been shunted off to Acadia by superiors who tire of his rejection of authority and his unorthodox-perhaps even brutal-methods. Having an aversion to the almost claustrophobic station, 48 million miles from Earth, Haber is simply trying to figure out where he belongs.

Dr. Bridwell – Inventor of a process which uses exhaust from machines and reconverts it into energy, sort of like a mechanical respiration and photosynthesis. Before he is able to patent the idea, he is pursued by numerous corporations wanting to capitalize on the trillions this discovery will generate. Wanting his discovery to benefit everyone, not just a corporation, Dr. Bridwell has come to the Acadia station to hide. But when you’re being chased by men with money to throw out a window and not care about, there’s nowhere to hide, not even in space…

Lt. Toschi – The second-in-command in the law enforcement office. Toschi takes his job seriously, and ends up being the man Haber best identifies with in the department, which is made up of the Marshall, three senior officers, and several junior layabouts. Though he allows for the occasional mistake to be made by his men, Toschi usually demands the best from his officers, which makes him an unpopular leader- but Toschi cares not about popularity, he cares about subordination, which his men always have.

Sgt. Montone – One of the two sergeants and the second senior officer in the department. Montone is generally the man who can appear a competent police officer, but often has no idea what the hell he’s doing. He frequently looks to guidance from the other senior officers, and specifically Marshall Haber.

Sgt. Delahunt – The third senior officer. Delahunt is a more sensible officer than Montone, but while Montone is trying his best, Delahunt seems to hold back, downplaying his superiority. He associates better with the junior officers than he does with his fellow senior officers, and so he often acts as a sort of go-between.

Alderson – He has been hired by a corporation to perform a job. What that is can’t be explained now, but you can be sure it isn’t exactly legal.

Boyle – A fellow conspirator of Alderson’s. They are both being paid very well to perform a job, but it should also be said that corporate bigwigs like to tie up their loose ends, should something go wrong. NOTE: Boyle is never seen, only referenced to.

Dr. Brewster – The head of the infirmary and pathology department on Acadia. Being the only real doctor in charge of a group of nurses and paramedics, Brewster is frequently stressed by the fact that she is the only person qualified to diagnose, dismiss, and effectively treat patients. This is not exactly easy on a station of several thousand. She has a grudging respect for Marshall Haber, and he for her, although they’re not above making smart remarks about one another.

Hirayasu – The representative of the corporation Global Dynamics. He is the man sent in when there are…tensions that must be sorted out. In a cruder sense, he is a corporate problem remover. His presence on Acadia can only have something to do with the man everyone wants…

Koepp – Assistant to Hirayasu. Not much more than an aide who provides his boss with everything he needs. Considering the line of business Hirayasu is in, Koepp might be more than an ordinary aide…

Rudd – Manager of Space Station Acadia. He is a man who likes things to be nice and orderly, but is not overly interested in enforcing the system to the letter, which is why the police force is relatively small. In the interest of keeping his station running on funding, he likes problems to be sorted out as quickly as possible.

Holton – Head of maintenance and waste management on the station. He is a gruff man who does not particularly like his dirty, low-level job, but there is little else for him to do. Maintenance is a job that commands little respect, but entails much responsibility, something which Holton resents, particularly when his monotonous routine is interrupted by “intrusions” by other departments.

A transport shuttle flies through space. The sound of its rocket jets fills the stillness of the black. Two pilots silently maneuver the shuttle. In the back, a lone man, a nervous-looking sort, sits silently. He looks out the side hatches, into the darkness, as if wary of attack. He is dressed in a tan trenchcoat, over an olive green shirt and black tie. His glasses are the kind a doctor would wear, except these are of the latest model, with a sleek black frame and thin rims. A briefcase sits on the seat next to him. Save for the man, the passenger hold is empty.
Far in the distance, a white circular object can be seen. Upon closer inspection, it is seen to be a space station, floating in space. The shuttle is clearly heading towards it. Soon enough, the shuttle flies overhead, makes a sharp 180 turn and drifts downward to land inside the station.
The ship is largely corridors and larger rooms. The shuttle lands in a large shuttle bay, which is filled with several other shuttles. The man leaves the shuttle and heads for a set of automatic doors which open into a corridor. Another man stands here flanked by two men who appear to be police officers; they wear the dark blue jumpsuits (Police Pilot) of station police. The man in front of them is wearing casual clothing, clearly a man of some importance but not concerned with being formal. After all, the man who has just arrived is not interested in being formal. The station man approaches the arrival.

MAN
Dr. Bridwell, I’m Rudd, the manager. I’d just like to say, well…welcome to Acadia Station. The best place to be when you’re 48 million miles from earth.

DR. BRIDWELL
If you’ll remember, Mr. Rudd, I specified in my e-mail that I wanted to make as unnoticeable an arrival as possible.

RUDD
Yes, well, as you can see, it’s just me and my most trusted officers. This here-
(Indicates one of the officers)
-is Marshall Haber, the head officer of our police sector. And this-
(Indicates the other officer)
-is his second in command, Lieutenant Toschi. If for any reason you’ve cause to believe you’re in trouble, you can depend on these men to sort it out.
(Pause)
I’d also like to add…it’s an honor to have a person of such importance on our station.

DR. BRIDWELL
I appreciate it, Mr. Rudd, but I’d like to get to my room as soon as possible.

RUDD
Yes, of course. Haber, Toschi, room 943.

HABER
Right. This way, Dr. Bridwell.

HABER and TOSCHI lead BRIDWELL along several corridors and to an elevator, which they crowd inside and head up to the ninth floor. This leads to a brightly lit corridor which has several white doors branching off of it, clearly rooms people are meant to stay in. The group stops at one of these doors.

HABER
This is it, Doctor. Each room has its own bathroom, and there’s a phone that can connect to any department in the station, should you need to call. Will there be anything else?

DR. BRIDWELL
I don’t think so. Thank you, Marshall.

BRIDWELL quickly enters and shuts the door. HABER and TOSCHI stare at the door, then at each other as they walk back up the corridor to the elevator.

TOSCHI
He certainly seemed wired.

HABER
Figures. Did you see the headlines about him last week?

TOSCHI
If I had a hundred different corporations coming after me, I’d probably hole up out here too.

HABER
Whatever. Point is, he’s our problem now. Fifty other stations he could’ve picked in the galaxy, but we get stuck with him.

The elevator doors close on them.

The hotel room is a lot of dark grey walls, dimly lit by bulbs with blue filters. Through the window opposite the door, space extends endlessly. BRIDWELL is not particularly interested. He looks about the room nervously as he moves from the entranceway to the main room. He sees a television on a dresser against one wall and sets the briefcase next to it, in the nook between the TV and the corner.
Next, he enters the bathroom and runs the water for no real reason. Then he stares at himself in the mirror. He was lucky to reach this place. But the men after him will find out where he’s gone sooner or later. Then what?

Acadia’s justice sector is relatively small, comprising of the command center and a jail. In spite of this, it appears a relatively homey place, with all the accoutrements the officers have added to it. A few officers are milling about when HABER and TOSCHI arrive, there being little to do.

HABER
Montone, Delahunt, c’mere.

Two of the officers approach. What distinguishes these senior officers from the juniors is that their jumpsuits, like those of HABER and TOSCHI, are dark blue, while the junior officers wear a sky blue jumpsuit. One officer looks a bit confused, while the other looks relatively alert.
