View Full Version : Sooooo where'd your online persona name come from?
Dulci
08-12-2008, 11:01 PM
I'm Dulci!
Dulci is short for Dulcinea. From Don Quixote. Read all about it! (http://www.wam.umd.edu/~david/dulcinea.htm)
Dulcinea is the name I've used in several MMPORG's.
Dulcilicious is the silly phrase that came up a few years ago to describe movies I think are re-watchable.

Jase is what people I know call me and 180 is a reference to the 180° rule. It is a basic film editing guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other.
Yup, I'm a nerd allright.
Mine comes from a long ways back, when i started going onto the net it was the easiest way to deflect noob attacks as i would claim, duh.... my user name. And now its like that pair of worn leather shoes that are comfortable.

No matter how lovely (or crappy) today may be, there's always another new dawn (and a chance to have a better day than today). Accept or deny, look forward, and move on. Screen name and words to live by in one neat package- what a bargain.
Had the name since the mid 90's. Before that it was VladDragon, before that it was something to do with being an artist, but damned if I can remember. Have also operated under We2andYou, but that's a tale for another day, in another forum, with a different group of people...
Only reason I don't call myself Jason ====== is because that way, I don't get to pick my own stalkers.

Well mine is fairly simple:
sg = initials...because hey, why not make it easier for people?
Porsche = well, this isn't too simple. My grandfather used to tell me "You know _____, you remind me of a Porsche"...and little did we know that he had had dementia for about 6 years.
48 = two numbers I like
There you have it.
riott007
08-13-2008, 01:55 AM
LOL @ Dementia
riott comes from riotgirl which was an 80's punk girl movement. See Bikini Kill, L7 etc type of music.
The 007 came from aholes making me add numbers to my username when registering at various places.

Mine is the simplest: it's my name.
Most boring post ever?
Most boring post ever?
Yes, yes it was. Maybe you should consider changing that to Norrie42. OR! Maybe you could have explained the whole fpb thing.
Delirious? (yes, it's spelled with a question mark, coz its kool) were a band I liked when I first bought The Movies, but now I've totally gone off them due to an early life crisis.
I figured my username was just going to be used for TMO, never thought I'd be going on some forums, so I stuck studios at the end of it.
I've gone off that now because it makes me look like a spanner, so I choose to be known as Del. Yes, I'm guilty of making my own nickname, sad isn't it? Seeing as though people were calling me Delirious and Studios or DS or Big D and whatnot I thought it would be best to put a stop to such nonsense.
The avatar came at around a similar time I created my nickname. It comes from a childrens show called Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. Scarily enough it amused me, watching it with my sister and I grew disturbingly fond of the character 'Bloo'. The avatar has stuck and has been candidly described as a 'giant blue condom'.
...Which in hindsight is completely daft.
Roger
08-13-2008, 03:52 AM
I use my own name, obvious I know. This is because I am myself on the internet.
More interesting is why my name is Roger. It was the name of my mum's imaginary friend from when she was a child.
BiggsTrek
08-13-2008, 06:08 AM
BiggsTrek is a combination of two sci-fi franchises that have had way too much influence in my life, Star Wars and Star Trek. (And yes, I know there is faaaar better sci-fi about than those...)
'Biggs' is from Biggs Darklighter, a small character from the original Star Wars movie.
'Trek' is pretty obvious from Star Trek.
I originally made it up to have a yahoo email address/ID that I didn't have to hit the 'shift' key to type! (I originally had a shared account with my wife with about 3 underscores in it... I'm just lazy, I know!)
frosty_frost09
08-13-2008, 07:54 AM
Well, mine is rather boring, and has no real "story" behind it.
frosty is a nickname everyone used to call me to piss me off.
frost is my last name.
The '09' was just added because...well, im not exactly sure why I put '09' at the end.
kuroken
08-13-2008, 09:02 AM
I think I've told this boring story on the air, but hey, I'm always up for a chance to bore people in a second medium...
Early 90's, The Sierra Network (a proto-online gaming service run by Sierra Online, the game company) - signed up (dial up access, $125/month for unlimited access) - they had a RPG called Shadows of Yserbius - needed a character name - my first was Zatoichi (after the Japanese blind swordsman series) but people had problems spelling it - so I decided on a clever play on my name for my next character - Shiro (japanese for white, my last name) and Ken (my first name, and also japanese for sword). Hence I was Shiroken.
Shiro was a fighter or paladin or something like that - and when I decided to make some other characters in the game (mage, barbarian, etc.) I decided to keep the "ken" brothers theme - so I had Kuroken (Black Sword), AkaKen (Red Sword) etc.
Unfortunately there's some kind of damn popular anime character or something named Shiroken, and hence I couldn't use the name widely, it always being taken. So I fell back to Kuroken (less often taken, though somebody on Skype had kuroken when I signed up two years ago, so I had to chose kuroken_tmoa - probably sucks to be them now...LOL) and that's become my primary nom de net.
Ken
FredTheDuck
08-13-2008, 10:01 AM
I've repeated this several times, but it's a story I don't mind telling.
FredTheDuck was, when I was little, my way of swearing at my sister without either parent having any idea what the hell I was on about. I knew she knew what I was on about, and that was all that was important...
if you still don't get it:
F_______uck

So there.... if I ever tell you to FredTheDuck off, now you know what I'm on about :p
Elbow
08-13-2008, 10:19 AM
Elbowlow
The Bolo or Bola
A tool or weapon used in South America - thrown to wrap around the legs of an animal.
I didn't mean to give myself a nickname, I just found elbow easier to deal with.
Then I come to find there's a web site and a music group named Elbow. Oh well, Dulci calls me L which is way better than tool any day.
Sparky
08-13-2008, 10:35 AM
My father used to light matches off my neck - hence i became known as 'sparky'
Not really, one of my buddies used to call me Sparky and it seemed like a good name to carry on into the 'online' world.
cheers

BudBundysMullet
08-13-2008, 12:29 PM
My first user name Johnny Ace came from when I was big into wrestling and became my wrestling persona and my brother (6-Headedmonster) and I would do some backyard wrestling. BudBundysMullet comes from a character from the TV show Married With Children, Bud Bundy, and within the third season he had a cool mullet, and a name was born. I first used this name originally on the Guitar Hero Forums, and for all of you who thought TMO was bad, try a community of people whining and bitching about musical tastes.
Not that interesting, but there it is.
sisch

db4321
08-13-2008, 03:45 PM
When I was trying to sign in to the Lionhead forums for the first time, it wouldn't accept my original user name. It kept on saying something about your user name must have a mixture of letters and numbers.
So after several minutes faffing about, I thought "oh sod it, db4321. That'll have to do, I probably won't be hanging around for long anyway."
Anyway, db refers to my initials but 4321 is just four random numbers (which, er, just so happen to be 4, 3, 2 and 1) and have no meaning whatsoever.
For a forum/website where a good imagination is probably a prerequisite, db4321 is hardly imaginative but I'm happy to stick with it (or to put it another way, I really can't be bothered to change it).
A very dull and boring story told in a very long winded way!:)

Ellis07
08-21-2008, 06:30 PM
Oh mine is easy as they come. I don't even know why I need to post to this.
Basically my name is Ellis (Haha it's a Welsh name and you normally find it as a surname - it's my first name) and I thought it looked a bit bare with just 'Ellis', so I added the year I came on the lionhead community '07'. Bit simple. But I have new accounts now that says 'Ellis08'.
back when i did a college semester in jolly old England..I had a room mate at the time..let's just all him Sam. Sam was an awkward fellow..i would ritually observe him cutting out the crotch of his knickers and sometimes dressing up in that costume that cher wore on that video where she sang to a bunch of horny sailors....
anyways one day i was out with some friends when i felt ill and decided to head back to the flat..i could hear some disturbing noises..i slowly and curioulsy approached..when i hear Sam's voice cry out
"oh yes i like the 6 headed monster ...but 3 at a time boys"
when the 6 sailors left and sam was no longer in the Cher costume..the name stuck in my head..constantly disturbing me..until i became totally deranged and started making home movies.
I wonder whatever happened to the guy
My kid watches that show and I thought that characters name was Del, and my son kept correcting me, which left me confused. Until I looked it up.
Hahaha. :D That's the first time I've heard of someone think my nickname is the characters name.
Yes, I'm a filthy plagiarist.
TheFlyingDuDe
08-25-2008, 05:34 AM
In my earlier internet day I was known as DayDream... when I started using The Movies I came to know that there is a porno production studio named DayDream films... so I decided to take on a new nick.
With my favourite movie being the big Lebowski at that time and being totally fascinated by the scene where TheDude flyies through womens legs... it became TheFlyingDuDe. Aditionally I watched that film in a plaine for the first time so I was convinced this has to be it! =)
btw I always thaught del would draw that blue condom thingy himself :D

MarvellousGuppi
08-25-2008, 11:16 PM
Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away..... Well it was England actually. I used to play a game known as Star Wars Galaxies. In this game I played a character that looked like this
http://www.game-revolution.com/oldsite/games/pc/rpg/star_wars_galaxies_mon_calamari.jpg
Since they were amphibious fish things, I chose a suitably fishy name, Guppi. I added the Marvellous and Movies part in order to have the MGM initials when I was planning on making an ingame guild video (which never happened)
After I left SWG, I came back a few months later and started another character called EckiEckiEepugF'tang
After I came to The Movies a few years later I chose to use the Guppi name since it fit with the movies more.

Leora's just a name I've used since... Umm... How old is the first Diablo game? :p It was just a random name I made up for my character, and it's stuck. I've since learned it's actually a real name, which would explain why it's often taken on forums and email thinggis. Evil!
So, yeah... boring! :p
Nukester
08-26-2008, 08:24 PM
First of, this is a great thread with some interesting reads!
As for me, I would say you'd need to cast your mind back to 1993 when a guy by the name of 'Sean Cooper' (Bullfrog) developed an isometric real-time strategy game called 'Syndicate'.
One of my all time favourites had me running around throwing nuke grenades and by the time it's sequel arrived (Syndicate Wars), I just couldn't get enough of those good old nuke grenades/bombs :001_tt1:
The name Nukester originated from the crazy fun I had causing mayhem with those cyborgs on the virtual utopian streets and it has stuck ever since. :shifty:
I am still praying for another Syndicate game (although it's wishful thinking):001_smile:

The name comes from high school, maybe grade 10, and it involved marching from class to class with your shoulders hiked up way up to your ears.. then you swing your arms as you proceed... but JUST the lower half, below the elbow.
Finally you sing a parade song .. I think it's a Souza, marching band type thing, as you head to class.. that's the story. BOO!!
goof-parade. No one had that name.. it's never taken.I took it.
Now I don't like being called "Goof" because .. you know..

Well I'm Captain Strider and where did this name come from well lets see.
Before joining TMO I attempted to get involved at the Star Trek Gamers forum. And at the time I'd been playing a game called Star Fleet Command 3. (Basically a Captain of a starship) So I cast myself as a Captain, later I would create Star Trek fan-fiction based on the latest movie (Nemesis) and the game.
The Strider part was just a personal choice and I liked it, I may have been influenced by Lord of the Rings as I believe Aragorn was referred to Strider once. (unless I missheard :001_tongue:)
Now of course the character of Captain Strider has moved to my EDS Destiny series and he's played by myself (go figure)

Hey, Strider. I thought that name sounded familiar. Did you used to hang at the Taldren forums for SFC? I have to admit, I was not a fan of 3 but was big into the previous installments, and was part of a hosting team for several Dynaverse servers. I loved being the Praetor of the Romulans. Way too much fun coordinating the troops during a surge of enemy starships.
Anyway, my name. Well it all started when I was a child. I used to make up stories to explain why I was different than other kids. My name came from one such story (not the one about me being a shape shifting fruit tree from Venus). The story involved government conspiracies and genetic manipulation, you know, the works. I used to go by Manimal way back when, as there was this girl who used to call me that from time to time, but as the internet grew, that name was taken more and more often. So, as I was signing up for some forum or game and was continually frustrated by names being taken, my cousin said "Hey, why don't you use EmeraldEdge, that story rocks." and thus it has been ever since. Back then, if you did a search for emerald edge, you'd only get me, but now you get all sorts of stuff. German metal bands, blue grass bands, and who knows what else. I guess I'm not as active on the internet as I used to be. That's a good thing, right?

Hey EE, StarFleet Command was what got me into the series, I skipped two and went to three (I since bought two) three was a disappointment overly simplified, one ship to command, no missiles/fighters and less races but I did get addicted and it spurred my imagination (you could say it helped prototype my own series).
I'm not big on online gaming so it probably wasn't me on the Taldren forums (I think Taldren had already gone bankrupt back then) but I joined Star Trek gamers to show off a mod For SFC3 I was working on, even got my own section in the forums. However back then i wasn't great on the community front and never really got involved there, eventually I joined TMO and the mod fell by the wayside.
The community at dynaverse.net look to be making SFC4 with the help of a couple of ex-taldren employees, which has kept me checking the communities once in a while.
Oh I think I came across a community member under the name of CaptainStriker which maybe who you were thinking off, but then again alot of members like to have a username with a rank in them.

Mefune Akira
09-19-2008, 04:57 PM
I first used the name Mefune Akira for a video game. The first name of Mifune was taken, so I adjusted the spelling.
Mefune is from a famous Japanese actor of samurai films Toshiro Mifune.
Akira is from both a famous Japanese director Akira Kurosawa and the animated Japanese film Akira.
The name has always given the impression I'm Japanese, which I am not. I just love the Japanese culture...and ahem...Japanese women. lol

123= Random Numbers
Not really so random...more likely sequential.
My name on here comes from the Warhammer 40,000 universe - "Orky" is a general name for anything to do with Ork culture (yes, it's spelt "Ork", not "Orc" - two different things) and the Orks use it as a term for more or less anything good and properly Orkish - (IE: "Make it Orky!"). The name "Ork-Boy" refers to the standard name for basic Ork units, called "Boyz". The term "Orkish Studios" is an obvious extention of this - it's also a sort of in-house joke, as in the W40K universe, things that are "Orkish" are inherrently junky, crude, poorly made, and prone to malfunction.
The OD part comes from a gaming clan I used to be in, called "Obsidian Dragon". It required that you use the OD- tag on whatever forum you went to that had anything to do with games, so hence when I made my lionhead profile I used the OD tag. Ended up getting booted outta' there though because I made a fuss about the mods trying to be virtual dictators, so I've tried to come up with what "OD" could stand for now that I'm stuck with it, but no luck has come of it.
Before that, I used "Jawa_man" (Star Wars nerd, maybe?) and "Nile_X_Z_N", with Nile being my first name and the X_Z_N bit being complete jibberish. I also occasionally go under the title "Zammuel Ventris", mostly in gaming purposes, with Zammuel being an extention of my middle-name (Zam) and Ventris being the surname of a character in the Warhammer 40,00 universe, Uriel Ventris.
And yes, SWG was amazingly awsome. I hear the combat upgrade screwed it over though, but I ended up moving about a week or so before it took effect and never was able to return to playing it because of my internet not being fast enough...But gosh - the roleplaying potential was emmense - I made a Sullustan named "Tumble" and a friend had a Rodian named "Twitch", and we roleplayed as two mentally unstable thugs-for-hire. It was on Bria, too, so more or less everyone was a "1337 uberhaxorzx" who became extremely confused when we approached them in-character. Great fun, great fun.

Have you gotten into the new Warhammer online game Orky?
Nahh, my internet is sadly not fast enough to play an online game - I'm stuck with browser-based things like Torncity and such . But the Warhammer-Fantasy online game looks pretty neat, they seem to have upheld the lore pretty well and have some interesting ideas - I'd sooner play it over WoW any day (Going to end up spending all of my cash on online games when I get a faster internet, I'm sure - but WoW will not be on the list. I don't know why, but I just have a complete dislike of all things Warcraft). I'm more excited about the Warhammer 40,000 MMORPG that's coming out around 2012 though - NOW that will be awsome! Supposidly like an upgraded version of Planetside (which was a fun game, contray to what everyone says) but on a much larger scale and with better effects.
And wow, I've completely gone-off topic :P...

Bricksfilms being my old studio title and username was a combo of my last name and well films. Last name being Bricoli I wanted to do something to honor my dad since he really has little interest in my film career, thought I would try and just make him feel proud or something. His nickname in high school used to be Bricks cause of Bricoli and he was tough as bricks, hehe, so yeah [:)]

Well my nickname dervies from the classic shoe brand 'Doc Martens'.
Since my last name is Martin, in high school, my friends would call me Doc in association with the famous brand of footwear.
So, unfortunately it isn't for cool reasons like, "I have a doctorate" or "I study medicine".
The 'On the Web' bit is self-explanatory. I am constantly strewn with spiderwebs.

Apparently,
Yami means a big arrancar who enjoys bullying people around. He has a technique to suck out the souls from the living.
Undead---God

Looking at the interesting stories behind some of the names here, mine seems rather silly. Probably because it is silly, but that's besides the point.
When I signed up I thought it would just be a Black & White 2 forum, so I chose Undead God, beause of the enemy god of the undead in the expansion pack. But since it didn't like spaces, and UndeadGod was taken, I just kept adding - after - until I found a name the system would let me have. By the time TMU came around, I was known across the forums as Undead---God, so I just keep it.
It's quite sad to think I was so desperate to have the name UndeadGod that I just kept adding - until I got it. What's even worse is that there must have been two people before me doing the exact same thing.

bongoman was a total accident. When I 1st logged into TM through the game etc, I didnt realize it was a permanent thing, and got stuck with the name basically. there's some guy in the US who's already had that name, in the music biz, but I'm not familiar with his stuff.
It worked out though I think i'd chosen 'Shaman', and I would have been stuck with that name, which I think is kinda pretentious now. :)
