View Full Version : IMDB like site for machinima?

I've actually been thinking about this for a long time, and in a few quick searches over time, i haven't really found anything. I think it would be a great idea, personally, to have a place like IMDB that keeps track of films created, the actors, the modders, being able to see a page for Guppi and all the films he's contributed to, might be interesting, or all the Films Dulci's been in, in chronological order, and maybe find other avenues for creativity through cross referencing.

It might also be a tool that could bridge the gap between communities, as people see what else is out there, people from other communities (like some of the voice acting communities) seek to log their efforts, etc. Does anyone else think such a thing would be a worthwhile endeavor?

Worthwhile? Yes indeed. However it will either mean a) A lot of work to keep the site upto date by whom ever runs it or b) a reliance on each member/director/actor etc to update pages relevant to them. Both have their pitfalls. Maybe a compromise might be possible?

Def worth further discussion EE

cheers

It would certainly be worthwhile, but I wouldn't envy the person(s) who decided to head it up.

I think it sounds like a great idea. But like Dulci and Sparky said, it would be a lot of work. Definitely be worth it in the end :)

Maybe an idea would firstly to have a movies Wiki and see what (if any) contributions that would get. If enough were willing to put the effort in to contribute (properly), then see about something more "official", perhaps?

Please excuse my ignorance, but is a "Wiki" thing an internet tool, or a specific site?

I ask because I've been fiddling with this idea for a while; I kinda know SQL databases, but the sheer amount of work involved always put me off.

If the Wiki thing can be done away from one of those horrible free sites with countless ads, I'd be more than happy to host it.

(I might even spring for another sub domain)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki_farm
gives a list of the available hosting sites and info on each of them. Have to say, am not a "connisewer" of Wikis, therefore am not the most qualified to talk about them. Hopefully, someone with a bit more "Wiki-nouse" will step up to the mark and enlighten us on this...?

Definitely an idea worthy of consideration... and of lots of thought as to just what software should be used, and how accessible modifying it should be.

Wiki software has the issue of being completely open. I wouldn't be surprised at all, if such a site were to use Wiki, to see lots of abuse. I'd like to see if there's any existing web software out there that accomplishes what IMDB itself does...

That's my biggest issue. Having looked at the link Killian posted (cheers mate), and its related stuff, I'd be concerned at the potential for abuse; mickey-taking; and general flim-flammery.

However, anything else seems to necessitate an enormous work load :(

The other issue with Wiki is the content is free-form. Even if everybody who added to it did it "properly", you'd likely still have people formatting pages differently. IMDB-like data has a certain structure and purpose to the content, so it would be much better to have a custom database built to accommodate it.

I'll have a look around to see what I can find... :)

Spread the love, you pair; don't take it all on your own shoulders! :)

This is a great idea, but I agree with the others, it would be a hell of a lot work to keep it updated and clean. I'm the first one to admit that I'm incredibly lazy... and I have no real idea about how those things work! (talking about adding to it "properly" and formatting pages.... huh?!)

We could go with something much more simple to start out with like a sexy calendar - listing our many accomplishments.

Though not a trivial programming job, this is certainly do-able - hire a programmer, throw some money at him or her, and there ya go...

The big problem is the actual running of the site, which could become a nightmare. There would be, as Norrie said, an enormous potential for "abuse; mickey-taking; and general flim-flammery" Somehow you have to get the data into the database - movies, actors, etc. Who puts it in? Users? Who checks the users for accuracy? If there's misinformation, or additional information that needs to be added, who does it? The person who originally put it in? Somebody else? Staff? And how do we check for accuracy?

Don't misunderstand - it's a great idea, and I'd love to see it fly. Just not sure if it's not biting off more than we can chew.

Biting off more than we can chew?
Have wiser words been spoken?
The wiki thing, to me is out.
The owner/admin/mod/person is pretty much a full time job – undoable (I hate bad words).

I think it's untenable: I'd loved to be proved wrong...

[Mind you, I like the sexy calendar idea. Who's January?]

Well, maybe I'll give it a bit of a further look once I've cleared out a few more projects. It's something I'd like to see.
