This left me with a dilemma - I could either go scrounging for a substitute co-host, do a rerun, or just do no show at all. Then Monk suggested another option - a pre-record. Our most famous pre-record was, of course, the Christmas Show for 2006, when Roger had plans for Sunday (Christmas Eve) - from that came the beloved ad-libbed A Christmas Carol. Would this week's pre-record be even half as memorable?

Then Monk came up with the idea of driving around Birmingham, with him as the tour guide, showing me things I'd not seen since my reality-show life moved here to The Magic City. So we ordered some equipment, fired up the TMOAMobile, and hit the road for a couple of hours.

Is it entertaining? How the hell should I know? You think I would actually listen before showtime? I cleaned it up (there was a hum in one channel) and unfortunately both of our times leaving the car did not go as planned (we did no testing before we hit the road), so I cut those two segments out.

I did, however, discover a side of Birmingham I did not expect.

Nazi Birmingham

So Monk takes me to the Federal Building downtown, and when we get out (I don't know if this is on the recording or not) he points out an interesting aspect of the building....


Yes, that is indeed a swastika on the column on one side of the front door. I also noticed the "federal" eagle AND something looking suspiciously like a fasces (the symbol of Fascist Italy under Mussolini) on either side of the door.


Admittedly, they have some....funny....ideas here in The Magic City, so this was not as shocking as the other thing he showed me.


Satanic Birmingham

The Southside of Birmingham is the hip, trendy part of town, just over the mountain where I live. And the epicenter of this trendiness is Five Points South. And right there at Five Points South is this sculpture and fountain.


Now when I saw this thing, this cloven-hoofed ram sitting on a stool or something, reading to the attentive animals, I instantly thought "Hmmm, isn't that a little radical for the Bible Belt, of which Alabama is the buckle?" Then Monk pointed out something else, some of which I captured in my second shot....


There are five frogs arrayed before their...well, satanic master....squirting water in a way that closely resembles a....pentagram.

What the hell? I mean, really.

Monk explained that others had seen this....possible....meaning, and so, across the street, not really visible in the first picture, is a statue of Brother Somebody Or Other, a local B'ham monk, on his knees, praying.

So those were, for me, a couple of the highlights of the trip - we also saw some other stuff, which you can hear on the broadcast tomorrow, and Monk was seemingly amazed at the Google Navigation app on my phone that got us to Rickwood Field, the oldest still-standing baseball stadium in the country (Both the recent Jackie Robinson movie, 42, and The Natural were filmed, in part, at Rickwood Field.)

So that's what you'll hear tomorrow following TMOA Radio Theater. An hour and thirty-seven minutes of Mr. Monk's Birmingham. Will it be entertaining? I dunno. Probably more entertaining than a rerun....depending, of course, on which rerun I might have played....
