MEG pre production thread

Although work is still ongoing on the grayskull sequel, I wanted to let everyone know about my next project, which will be an adaptation of the Steve Alten novel MEG
which centers around an 80 foot megalodon shark long thought to be extinct being rediscovered alive... It is one of my favorite novels, and one which I had hoped to see on the big screen before now. I'll be making a start on the script soon, which I intend to keep faithful to the book, with production planned to begin after I finish with grayskull. Needless to say I'm pretty excited to begin production!!

made heaps of progress on this one. script is flying along nicely, and im ready to begin casting! a relevant thread will be going up soon for it. ( if anyone is immediately interested in a part before then, drop me a pm) im keeping as close to the book as i can, both dialogue and structure wise. in advance of the casting, here is a small teaser trailer to whet the appetite, and the movie synopsis

Synopsis:

Seven years ago, navy deep-sea pilot JONAS TAYLOR found himself on a top-secret dive in the Mariana Trench, the deepest, most unexplored realm in the ocean. Seven miles down he came face-to-face with the most fearsome predator ever to inhabit the planet - Carcharodon Megalodon- the 70-foot 60,000 pound prehistoric cousin of the great white shark. Rushing his submersible topside, he barely escaped, but his actions cost the lives of the two scientists on-board the vessel, as well as his career, the Navy dismissing his claims as mere "aberrations of the deep." When an opportunity to return to the Mariana Trench presents itself, Jonas takes it, intent on returning topside with a 7-inch white tooth. But man's presence in this unexplored domain releases one of the sharks from its purgatory - a pregnant female - and now the hunt is on!

LEAD ROLES:
Jonas Taylor. ( AMERICAN male early 30's) role length: large, substantial amount of dialogue

former deep sea submersible pilot for the navy. panicked and ascended too quickly in a dive to the mariana trench, killing two others onboard. now studies the extinct megalodon, which he is sure he saw deep in the trench...

SAMPLE LINE: My professional opinion is that you should stay the hell away from the mariana trench. Especially in a one man submersible!


Maggie Taylor ( AMERICAN or ENGLISH female mid late 20's) role length: Medium / large

Jonas's wife, disgusted by his apparent carrer suicide, has turned her attention to herself, excelling through the media ranks. self centred and driven, she will stop at nothing to get exactly what she wants, when she wants, no matter who she has to step on along the way, her husband included.

SAMPLE LINE: Dont start with me jonas! Im not in the mood! This is the biggest night of my career and i had to practically drag you out of that lecture hall.


Bud Harris ( AMERICAN Male late 30's) ROLE LENGTH: Medium

Jonas's millionaire best friend, and maggies executive producer. also an alcoholic with a soft spot for jonas's wife maggie.

SAMPLE LINE: You're miserable bud harris. millionaires arent supposed ot be miserable. come on pal, tel me whats wrong.


Masao Tanaka ( JAPANESE male 50+) ROLE LENGTH: Medium

owner of the tanaka lagoon and friend of jonas taylor, inlists the help of jonas when his deep sea robots in the mariana trench begin to mysteriously malfunction for no apparent reason. has two childern, DJ and Terry.

SAMPLE LINE: Dj did. He says there are patches of giant tubeworms down there. Pure white. I think the navy worked you too hard, and you hallucinated.


Terry Tanaka ( Japanese/American Female 20's) Role Length: MEDIUM
daughter of masao tanaka. born in japan, but raised in america. great submersible pilot herself, and very hot headed and opinionated. frustrated by her fathers traditional beliefs that women are less capable than men. wants to prove him wrong. has a turbulent relationship with jonas.


SAMPLE LINE: Before you began studying these megalodons, your career was focussed entirely on piloting deep sea submersibles for the navy. I would like to know why, at the peak of your career, you suddenly quit.


DJ Tanaka ( JAPANESE/AMERICAN male 19) ROLE SIZE: MEdium
Son of masao, and superb submersible pilot himself .has made numerous dives to the mariana trench for his father. has been known as impulsive and reckless in the past.

SAMPLE LINE: Doc, switch on your searchlight. you need to avoid direct contact with those chimney stacks or they could melt the subs seals


Mac (AMERICAN late 30's) ROLE LENGTH Small/Medium
old navy helecopter pilot friend of jonas. now retired and into everything illegal from smuggling to drug running. he asks no questions and does whatever is asked of him as long as he is paid ( in advance)

SAMPLE LINE: We got about fifteen more minuites worth of fuel and then we will have to turn back.


Frank Heller (ENGLISH late 40's) Medium Role

Physician who was in charge of jonas's ill fated navy dives. has never forgiven jonas, and makes no secret of the fact that he holds him personally responsible for the death of two good men.

SAMPLE LINE: i guess that little confession makes everything alright in your book, but it changes nothing with me. you were daydreaming taylor!

MINOR ROLES

David Adashek ( AMERICAN male 30's) ROLE LENGTH Small
journalist hired by maggie to follow and report on her husbands doings.

SAMPLE LINE: Hey, you’re the boss. If you want me to keep on the trail, then im gonna need some more cash.

first couple of roles cast! i can happily confirm that KILLIAN will play frank heller, and MUSTACHIO26 will take on the role of DJ Tanaka. anyone else what a role in this one? its gonna be an epic!

PHILLIPE: male 30's JAMAICAN (10 to 15 lines)

Jamaican fisherman who will do any job for the right amount of money - knows mac well.

Sample line: No nothin! dat a monster down dere, sometin' real big. No fish i ever seen coulda' killed an orca wit' one bite like dat. You chasin de devil mon. Keep yo damn money, we goin in NOW!

REPORTER any age/sex voice! (Approx 6 lines)

Sample line: Are you saying there are more of them out there?

Bellboy. Male any age/voice. (1 line!)
LINE: Can i call you a taxi sir?

still some juicy major roles for this one, jonas in particular could be a superb role for someone out there : - )

Also, got some huge info on casting to come soon, with several notable actors already taking their place in this production. a couple that i can confirm right now, is that the superb AFTERTHOUGHT will voice Maggie Taylor
and the Equally Talented JOSEPH KW will Voice Masao Tanaka.

i have had a rediculous ammount of interest in this, with multiple voice acotrs sending sample lines on an almost daily basis, which is great! casting for the major roles will be announced on JAN 12th, then casting reopened for any roles that were left over if anyone wants to try for them. looking forward to gettin this one underway!

Script is now complete! Almost 100 pages long, but will make for a hopfully exciting movie. Going to bring casting announcements forward to this weekend, so I can get scripts out nice and early. Once initial casting is done I'll re open it for the unfilled roles until they are in place
